Fiesta de San Joaquin

La Fiesta de San Joaquin is a cultural extravaganza celebrated in San Joaquin Village, Corozal District, Belize C.A in honor of the community’s patron saint. The fiesta commences on August 8th with the “corrida de la antorcha” (torch marathon) from Bacalar, Quintana Roo to the village of San Joaquin. La fiesta commemorate the cultural and historical ties between the two communities. The runners arrive on time to church in Bacalar, Mexico City. The torch is light with veladoras for the first novenas (nine days of prayers). The fiesta culminates on August 16th with a mass, followed by a social feria with mechanical rides, traditional foods and beverages, and stalls with crafts and local products. A highlight of the feria is the opening ceremony where Miss San Joaquin is crowned, followed by cultural presentations and a dancehall where live bands are invited to entertain revelers. Food such as Garnachas, Tamales, BBQ are some of the ritual food that is seen there. Also beverages are being sold such as COCA-COLA, FANTA and SPRITE.

Most of these mechanical games are from Mexico. These traditional Mexican games are not only tremendously fun, but also educational and an ideal way to spend time with family and friends.Perhaps the most typical Mexican game for children is catching the hat. To play, the first thing is that each child has his hat. They can be easily made with paper if necessary. Each of the hats is tied to the back of a child. When Mexican music begins to sound, each child has to try to steal another's hat without losing theirs. The beginnings and pauses of the music mark the beginning and end of each turn. Children who lose their hats should sit and wait for the next few turns until the last two remaining children are declared winners.

A torch is light these is made of a piece of wood with a flame at one end that is used to give light. This torch is being run from Bacalar, Quintana Roo, to San Joaquin Village, Corozal District, Belize C.A thats a distance of 20 miles long. The torch is being hold by each of the members and if that person gets tired, they switch partners and the route continues like that.
