US committee system
In the United States Congress, a system of committees considers law relating to each policy area. The committees were formed when the House of Representatives had to many laws coming in. The committees discuss bills and decided if they wanted to send them to the House of Representatives. The system started in 1789 and they dealt with Revolutionary War claims, post roads and territories, and trade with other countries. Today there are three main types of committees. They are Standing Committees, Select or Special Committees, and Joint Committees. The Standing Committees are permanent committees that consider bills and oversee certain programs. They also recommend funding levels for government operations. Next, Select or Special Committees deal with new issues and more important issues. These committees can be temporary or permanent depending on the situation. Last, the Joint Committees are made up of members of the House and the Senate. These committees perform studies and monitor certain areas of government. Overall, Committees help to keep government together and to keep our country running smoothly.
