Evaluate an article

[edit]

This is where you will complete your article evaluation. Please use the template below to evaluate your selected article.

  • Irish phonology: (Irish phonology)
  • This article details the various phonological variations between regional dialects of Irish, much like many other languages.

Lead

[edit]

The lead starts with an introductory sentence that establishes the main point of the article, which is that Irish has no standard pronunciation and dialects vary. It separates its main material into groups like occurrences in all Irish dialects, and notable differences between dialects. The lead does not have information that is not present in the article, and it is concise in summarizing its content with enough detail, but without being lacking.

Content

[edit]

The article's content is relevant, and it provides an overview of both current Irish dialects and historical ones. It is up to date. The content also covers all of the information it needs to to detail in order to explain the phonology of Irish.

Tone and Balance

[edit]

The article is neutral and is highly informational. It is not biased, and isn't persuasive in nature.

Sources and References

[edit]

All of the facts in the article are hyperlinked to a reliable secondary source. The literature cited is diverse—sources are both current and older in order to discuss old Irish dialects, and they are academic and unbiased. The links to the sources work.

Organization

[edit]

The article is easy to read, and it is broken down into sections that make logical sense such as the "Consonants" section followed by the "Vowels" section. The organization makes it easy to follow along, and it compares the phonology of different Irish dialects within each section. It does not appear to have any grammatical errors.

Images and Media

[edit]

The article includes images that are helpful for understanding the phonemes in Irish, and charts to sort out other elements to the dialects. They are captioned so it is easy to find what the image refers. The images follow copyright rules. They are organized so that it is not distracting from the rest of the text.

Checking the talk page

[edit]

The conversations going on primarily are about clarifications about the content. This is because the information-heavy nature of the article made it easy for the authors to present conflicting information. The article is a featured article, and it is a part of the WikiProjects Phonetics and Languages. Wikipedia talks about Irish dialect phonology in greater detail then we did in class—each person in the talk section is focusing in on even the slightest differences between two sounds in order to represent the phonological rules as accurately as possible.

Overall impressions

[edit]

This article is written very well. It utilizes a variety of sources, visual cues, and samples from dialects in developing its content to show similarities and differences between dialects. One thing is that many of the article's sources were not published after the early 2000s, so if more current sources exist, those could be good in the analysis of this topic. This article is very well developed, especially through the use of different types of media and sources and explanations of phonological processes.
