The Entrepreneurship Cell (E-Cell) at IIT Madras has been a leader in fostering entrepreneurship. At E-Cell, the focus extends beyond the outcome to emphasize the journey and mindset that lead to success. The Cell empowers both students and faculty to address global challenges, cultivate innovative solutions, and create opportunities for excellence. Its flagship event, E-Summit, attracts over 5,000 participants and features a diverse range of entrepreneurs and notable speakers.

History

The history of E-Cell at IIT Madras dates back to 1998, initially established as a center by the administration named CTIDES (Cell for Technology Innovation, Development and Entrepreneurship Support) with a vision to make everyone entrepreneurial in every work they do. The Entrepreneurship Cell has played a pivotal role in fostering some of the best startups. Notable successes include Detect Technologies (featured in Forbes 30 Under 30 – Asia) and Hyperverge[1]. The success of CTIDES continued till 2014, the year when it was renamed as ‘Entrepreneurship Cell’ at IIT Madras. From 2014 to 2017 ‘E-Weekend’ was conducted which was the overall sum up of the entrepreneurial tenure of the year.

E-Summit[2]

The event caters to a diverse audience, offering valuable learning opportunities for individuals ranging from newcomers to seasoned startup founders. With an annual footfall of 4,000 to 5,000 attendees, E-Summit[3] is recognized as a significant gathering for stakeholders in the field of entrepreneurship.

Themes and Notable Speakers:

E-Summit has a rich history of impactful themes, including "Disruption in Veins" (2022), "Sustain to Attain" (2021), and "Triumph Tails" (2020). The theme for E-Summit '23, "Assemblage of Changemakers", aimed to bring together individuals who take the unconventional path and create groundbreaking innovations. Notable speakers for the event included Deepit P[4]. , Pratham Mittal[5], Viraj Sheth[6], Sauvik Banerjee[7], and others. This year's theme, "Soaring through shifts" (2024), signifies persevering through the changing financial and geopolitical landscape.

Elevate is a Pan-India level fund raising pitching event that aims to bring eminent startups across the nation and world-class mentors and investors together, thus providing a sublime platform for the investors to network with and invest in the most promising startups in the country.

Bootcamp:

Bootcamp[8] is a 5 week long mini startup accelerator that provides early-stage startups with the requisite expertise and skills to make it big in the outside world. Bootcamp comprises entrepreneur workshops and weekly one-to-one mentoring sessions aimed at fast-tracking a budding startup's journey to success, Bootcamp involves startups competing against each other in a thrilling competition where winners stand to gain monetary and non-monetary benefits.

Inspirit:

Inspirit hosts lecture series with the most elite speakers of the nation. In 2023, there were 8 sessions with about 15 eminent speakers. The 2023 list includes Prashant Petti (Co-founder, EaseMyTrip), Deepit P (Co-founder, Inshorts), Gaurav B (CTO, Udaan), Satya Kaliki (CTO, Infra Market), Jivraj Singh (Founder, Indian Silicon Valley), Sunil Kumar[9] (CTO, ShipRocket), Sameer BV (Vice president, Nexus), Vikram Gupta (Vice President, IvyCap), Rajeev Suri (Vice President, Orios), Arjun Vaidya (Co-founder, V3 ventures), Dhiraj Rajaram (CEO, Mu Sigma), Guru Thiagarajan (Global Head of Trade settlements, Deutsche Bank), Mridul mahan (Head of IB and AFCC, Deutsche bank) and Taran Katial (Former CEO, Zee5 founder, COTO). The lectures covered a large variety of topics of great entrepreneur importance.

Social Campaign

In 2020-2021, the Cell initiated Pankh, a campaign supporting Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in overcoming the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Through policy competitions, case studies, and mentoring sessions, Pankh aimed to provide skills and opportunities to MSMEs and youth.

Following the success of Pankh, the Cell launched Suspire in 2021-2022, focusing on sustainability.

The 2022-2023 session introduced Heal-Thy, underscoring the importance of a clean and sustainable environment, continuing the Cell's commitment to societal betterment alongside entrepreneurship development.

ISO Certification

The Entrepreneurship Cell (E-Cell) at IIT Madras holds the distinction of being the first E-Summit in India to be ISO certified. This certification is a testament to the high standards and quality upheld by the E-Cell and its flagship event, the E-Summit.

Moreover, the ISO certification process ensures that proper training is conducted, the right people are hired, and all processes are documented for future reference.
