Fitness Classes

[edit]

The UBCO Hangar offers a wide range of fitness classes to encourage students to stay active for both physical and mental health aspects. In these classes, all participants are expected to participate in a non-judgmental, respectful environment to ensure safety and security of all members [2]. All fitness classes range between 45-60 minutes in length [2].

Bootcamp

[edit]

These classes are designed to push participants out of their comfort zones and challenge themselves to an intense training. Classes consist of high intensity bodyweight training to burn fat and tone muscles [2]. The offered bootcamp classes are 45 minutes, with high intensity interval training (HIIT) incorporated into each class

Flow yoga

[edit]

Flow yoga classes at the UBCO Hangar are incorporated to give members a time to set intentions, unwind from school, and challenge themselves to develop new techniques [2]. These classes focus on flexibility, balance, strength, and endurance. Each class is 45 minutes long, and has one instructor present to guide members through this practice [2].

Kickboxing

[edit]

These cardio-based classes are put in place to encourage members to build martial arts techniques, stamina, and flexibility. The 45 minute long class helps memes build muscles with a fun and challenging non-contact class [2].

Power yoga

[edit]

These 60 minute classes are inspired by ashtanga (a style of intense yoga with a fast paced environment, created in the 20th century). This is sometimes referred to as “gym yoga” as it was designed for athletes and people looking for a more vigorous yoga class. The instructors ensure each class differs slightly, so participants are encouraged to come back. This is not a set of specific poses, and varies with exercises and practices each week. Strength and Cardio: Each of these offered classes differ slightly with muscle group attention [2]. Typically, these classes include full body workouts, core strengthening, and bums and tums [2]. Each class is 60 minutes in length, with a trained instructor present to guide participants through a vigorous workout [2].

Personal Training

[edit]

UBC Recreation has a personal training program where students can choose from specialized training packages. The members are matched with personal trainers that fit their personal fitness goals and abilities. The personal fitness program includes various packages namely start-up package, weekly packages with workout plan and sessions, week plans with workout plan only, and single sessions [3].

Start-up package is an introductory package for members to meet with the trainers, discuss and set their fitness goals, and decide on the package or plan that is well-suited for them. The start-up fee, which is $75 includes an initial interview, goal setting, fitness assessment, and two personal training sessions [3]. As this is an orientation package, the members have to purchase other packages to receive a personal plan on an on-going basis [3].

Weekly packages include both workout plans and sessions with the trainers. This package allows the members to receive a four, six, or eight-week training plan depending on the members’ fitness goals and needs [3]. This package is designed to guide the members to stay on track, execute the plans properly and motivate members to increase their goals. The fee for the weekly personalized package ranges from $165 to $325 depending on the number of weeks chosen [3].

Week plans with workout plans do not include training sessions on an ongoing basis. This package, which is usually chosen after the start-up package has four to eight personalized workout plans set by the trainers [3]. This package is different from the weekly package as the former includes sessions only for exercise demonstration. The fee varies from $80 to $160 depending on the number of weeks chosen [3].

Single sessions are designed to have a trainer present throughout the workout. Students can purchase from one to nine sessions for $30 per session and ten sessions for $270 [3]. This option allows members to change their training routine [3].
