Major General Smith is currently serving as the commanding general for the 7th Infantry. Division at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. His commands include Bravo Battery, 25th Field Artillery (1st Infantry Division); 2nd BN, 377th Parachute Field Artillery Regiment (U.S. Army Alaska); and the 18th Field Artillery Brigade (82nd Airborne Division).

Recent assignments include Chief of Staff of the XVIII Airborne Corps; Director of Operations for Iraq and Syria as part of CJTF-OIR; Deputy Commanding General (S) for the 1st Infantry Division; Commandant of the U.S. Army Field Artillery School; and Chief of the Field Artillery; and J5, then Chief of Staff for the USNORTHCOM JFLCC (ARNORTH) during COVID-19 response operations.

MG Smith’s operational deployments include Operation Enduring Freedom, OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM, OPERATION INHERENT RESOLVE, OPERATION JOINT GUARD, OPERATION ALL AMERICAN ASSIST (82nd Airborne Hurricane) Katrina/Rita recovery efforts). Other overseas assignments include South Korea, Germany, and Alaska.

Millitary Carrier: MG Smith was commissioned at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, in 1991. He holds an MBA from Mississippi State University and graduated from the U.S. Army War College through the Army’s Fellowship Program at the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies.
