Bibliography

[edit]

This is where you will compile the bibliography for your Wikipedia assignment. Add the name and/or notes about what each source covers, then use the "Cite" button to generate the citation for that source.

  • Example: Luke, Learie. 2007. Identity and secession in the Caribbean: Tobago versus Trinidad, 1889–1980.[1]
    • This is a book published by a university press, so it should be a reliable source. It also covers the topic in some depth, so it's helpful in establishing notability.
  • Example: Galeano, Gloria; Bernal, Rodrigo (2013-11-08). "Sabinaria , a new genus of palms (Cryosophileae, Coryphoideae, Arecaceae) from the Colombia-Panama border". Phytotaxa.[2]
    • This is a peer-reviewed scientific journal, so it should be a reliable source. It covers the topic in some depth, so it's helpful in establishing notability.
  • Example: Baker, William J.; Dransfield, John (2016). "Beyond Genera Palmarum: progress and prospects in palm systematics". Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society.[3]
    • This is a peer-reviewed scientific journal, so it should be a reliable source for a specific fact. Since it only dedicates a few sentences to the topic, it can't be used to establish notability.

  • Annotated Bibliography Introduction: My topic will be about Pesticides in the Central Valley. I want to include more entries about the scientific findings and the impacts that pesticides have in the Central Valley. Furthermore, I will try to incorporate how organizations such as the UFW and politicians such as Gavin Newson have responded to the pesticide usages.
  • Arax, Mark. “Cancer Mystery Still Plagues California Farm Town McFarland.” Los Angeles Times, 20 Nov. 2014, www.latimes.com/local/la-me-cancer-mystery-still-plagues-mcfarland-19970814-story.ht ml. This article discusses the aftermath of the McFarland Cancer Cluster in 1975. Many years of data shows that the cancer rate among children in McFarland is very high and that the town still remains as one of the poorest. The point of this article is to inform the readers to evaluate if McFarland is still a safe place or not. This source will be helpful to add on to the already existing entry in my Wikipedia article.
  • Becker, Rachel. “California Poised to Restrict Bee-killing Pesticides.” CalMatters, 20 July 2022 https://calmatters.org/environment/2022/07/california-pesticides-restrictions/ This article focuses on the political efforts that have been put in to restrict pesticides. Specifically, it discusses the negative impacts of neonicotinoids in California. It details the specific legislations that were This source also has several charts and maps that could be visually appealing when added to the Wikipedia article.
  • Furlong, Melissa A., et al. “An Epigenome-Wide Association Study of Ambient Pyrethroid Pesticide Exposures in California’s Central Valley.” International Journal of Hygiene & Environmental Health, vol. 229, Aug. 2020, p. N.PAG. EBSCOhost, https://0-doi.org.pacificatclassic.pacific.edu/10.1016/j.ijheh.2020.113569. This study extensively covers the pyrethroid pesticide. It is a scientific study, and some of the study was a bit hard for me to understand. I think that this source could be useful to cite some of the important scientific results to explain the dangers of pesticide usage. It could help to maintain the neutrality of the article I will be working on.
  • Garrison, Jessica. “Newsom signs UFW bill aimed at helping California farmworkers organize” Los Angeles Times, 29 Sept. 2022, www.latimes.com/california/story/2022-09-28/newsom-signs-ufw-bill-aimed-at-helping-f armworkers-organize. This article talks about Biden’s response to the United Farmworkers’ marches in the San Joaquin Valley. He talks about how the farmers work hard and that they deserve to be respected. It includes a few anecdotes about farmworkers coming back from work. This source could be useful to shape my argument of how people are starting to acknowledge the dangers of pesticide usage.
  • LeNoir, James S., et al. “Summertime Transport of Current-use Pesticides From California’s Central Valley to the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, USA.” Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, vol. 18, no. 12, Wiley, Dec. 1999, pp. 2715–22. https://doi.org/10.1002/etc.5620181210. This journal talks about the pesticide levels in different locations in the Central Valley. It concludes with the potential effects of the pesticides. With so much information provided, I could create a new entry about the pesticide levels. As a science journal, it is neutral, and it is reliable. This data will be useful to maintain the neutrality of the whole article. I could also utilize the charts that the study provides.
  • Weaver, G. (2022, May 17). Fresnoland policy and Media Lab in California | the Fresno bee. Madera community says agricultural pesticides are harming them. Will California help? Retrieved October 24, 2022, https://www.fresnobee.com/fresnoland/article261396277.html This article talks about people’s experiences with the pesticides in the Central Valley. It is a primary source and therefore, it is very reliable. The article also talks about some regulations that need to be implemented. There are direct quotes from the interviews followed up by how these people are specifically impacted by pesticides. This information could be used to transition into Newsom’s UFW bill.
  • Weston, D. P., et al. “Distribution and Toxicity of Sediment-Associated Pesticides in Agriculture-Dominated Water Bodies of California’s Central Valley.” Environmental Science &Amp; Technology, vol. 38, no. 10, American Chemical Society (ACS), Apr. 2004, pp. 2752–59. https://doi.org/10.1021/es0352193. This is another scientific journal that describes the dangers of specific types of pesticides. I have not looked at the entire journal because it was slightly long, but methods such as toxicity testing would be useful for the Wikipedia article. I would need to do a deep read of the study to pick out which data to use.
  • Yurong, Dale. “UFW Holds Demonstration After Recent Hazmat Incidents Involving Over 130 Workers.” ABC30 Fresno, 29 June 2019, https://abc30.com/united-farm-workers-ufw-demonstration-march-hazmat-situations/5370367/ This is another article about the UFW. The article talks about how many people were taken to the hospital after a company used a new type of pesticide in an orchard in the Central Valley. These “practical” incidents are very useful to build up the claim that pesticide usages are still very problematic today. The UFW’s response also shows a good perspective of how the residents react to pesticide incidents.
