My name is Shaun.

My favorite color is blue. This is the first wikipedia page I have ever edited.

I am creating this account, and further page, for Social Change in the US, a sociology class at the University of Pittsburgh. Sociology is my minor and Information Science is my major. I am currently a senior, and I look forward to graduating in the very near future.

My country of focus for this class is the Netherlands. I recently (2/26/2008) contributed my knowledge of the Netherlands to the wikipedia article Deindustrialization.

Globalization

[edit]

I never really realized how early globalization began, but it's true, globalization is a result of imperialism. Maybe it's even just the next phase of imperialism. Imperialism was a necessary building block to reach globalization. While I do believe that globalization's benefits out weight it's negatives, I still think its an issue that should require the utmost caution. After all, we're not just talking about one state or one country, but rather, we are now talking about the entire world.
Globalization

Valentine Moghadam

[edit]

Moghadam's approach to and understanding of globalization was under the pretext that globalization is the "latest stage" of capitalism, and that globalization should be studied per dimension. She also specifically studied social-gender perspectives on globalization. Eventhough Moghadam focuses on gender perspectives, I found that the same general theories and observations could be applied to other classes with similar such experiences. In any case, the effects of globalization need to be explored at these low levels.

Leslie Sklair

[edit]

I most agreed with the global culture approach that Sklair took in her writings. In this approach, globalization is explored through a look at local and global culture(s) alike. Specifically, Sklair points out the ever increasing homogenization of local cultures globally as a result of mass media outlets. Perhaps, effectively creating a global culture. I think I agreed with this approach most, because it was the easiest to observe for myself. I had to look no further than this very website (Wikipedia.org). I maintain my belief that the type of media is not neccessarily of primiary importance, but rather, the ability for that media to be distributed and the extent of its distribution is most important.
