In the present day, at Seidoukan Academy, Ayato Amagiri discovers a handkerchief and enters a dormitory window. Inadvertently encountering Julis-Alexia von Riessfelt - the academy's fifth-highest ranking student - while she is getting dressed, Ayato hands over her handkerchief. Ayato escapes as soon as Julis blasts fire magic at him. In response, Julis duels Ayato. However, Ayato rescues Julis from an assassin who interferes in their duel, and Claudia Enfield, the student council president at Seidoukan Academy, invalidates the duel as a result. Later, Claudia tells Ayato about the six academies at Asterisk and how the Genestella are selected for duels. Ayato reveals that he is investigating the disappearance of her sister, Haruka. Claudia informs him about Ser Veresta, an Ogre Lux once used by Haruka, and that he is now a student at the academy. At the classroom, Kyōko Yatsuzaki assigns Ayato to sit next to Julis and also meets fellow student Eishirou Yabuki, a member of the academy's Newspaper Club. Eishirou tells Ayato that Julis is the princess of Lieseltania.
