The Role of NEP 2020 in Reviving and Preserving the Indian knowledge system

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is a revolutionary step in the education system of India, emphasizing the integration of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) to promote and preserve the intellectual and cultural heritage of the rich nation. The law recognizes the importance of Indian knowledge, including its contributions to mathematics, astronomy, medicine, philosophy, art and language. By embedding these elements in the framework of modern-day education, NEP 2020 aims to provide students with a worldview while creating a deeper connection between them and their cultural roots. This includes supporting regional languages as well as ancient languages such as Sanskrit, Pali and Pragmatics so that students can access texts and information in their original form. NEP 2020 also supports research and innovation in the IKS, creates specialized research centers and encourages research collaborations that explore the impact of ancient knowledge in the contemporary context. The policy also addresses digital preservation by using technology to digitize records and create repositories for wider access. Initiatives like the National Digital Library and Bharatavani are playing a key role in these efforts. In addition, the policy highlights the international potential of India’s contributions in areas like Yoga, Ayurveda and Vedic mathematics, positioning India as a leader in holistic and sustainable education. Promising, but the implementation of NEP 2020 faces serious challenges. These include problems in balancing traditional knowledge with contemporary educational needs, shortage of teachers and limited resources for digitization projects. Furthermore, popular skepticism about the relevance of IKS also needs to be addressed. This study explores the NEP 2020 vision for the prevention of IKS, assesses its key provisions and discusses its implications for education and personal leadership. The report concludes that while NEP 2020 presents an opportunity to enhance India’s intellectual property, its success depends on collaboration, policy implementation and rigorous investment. By combining tradition with modernity, NEP 2020 offers a culturally and globally unique model of education.
