Vital Articles

This is a list of basic subjects for which Wikipedia should have a corresponding high-quality article, and ideally a featured article. It serves as a centralized watchlist of the current status of some of Wikipedia's most important, essential articles. Articles that are already on Wikipedia:Featured articles are marked with a star (); articles that are considered Good articles are marked with a green circle (). Articles that are currently stubs or have cleanup tags on them and thus need to be improved as soon as possible are marked in bold.

This list is derived from the English-language version of the Meta page m:List of articles every Wikipedia should have, which origated on Simple Wikipedia as a list to help guide new versions of Wikipedia in making short articles for the most essential topics. Since then, the list has been greatly revised over time, and continues to be changed; current discussions of the list are available at the talk page.

This page has a concise version of the original list. It lists appropriately 1,000 of the most vital Wikipedia articles. A longer, expanded version, similar to the Meta page, is available at Wikipedia:Vital articles/Expanded. This list should have all the same entries as the concise list, plus around 500–1,000 more articles. Consequently, new additions to the list should preferably be proposed first at Wikipedia talk:Vital articles/Expanded. Whether they also merit inclusion on this list can then be discussed.

See also Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Core topics for another take on the minimal article list.
