Zindagi Trust

[edit]

The Zindagi Trust is a not for profit, non-governmental organization. It's foundation was laid by Pakistani pop singer, Shahzad Roy, in 2002.[1] It was started with an aim of making quality education accessible for non privileged, average Pakistani children. The trust started with the initiatives like paid-to-learn[2]. Zindagi trust also ran campaigns like "Chal-parha"[3] (an Urdu word that means "Come teach" in English) and "Sirf bandhi hai kamar" to spread awareness among the masses and bring as much as possible children and volunteers on board.

In 2009, Zindagi trust introduced a Life-Skill Based Education (LSBE) curriculum that educates children about their nutritional requirements, illness, diseases, human rights, physical and sexual abuse. Through constant efforts of Zindagi Trust and Aahung, it was legally made a part of curriculum in 2018 by Sindh government[4] and Balochistan government[5].

In 2013, following the efforts made by the Zindagi trust, National Assembly of Pakistan passed a bill, criminalizing corporal punishments in educational institutes[3][6][7].

Services

[edit]

Since it's inception in 2002, Zindagi trust undertook a number of initiatives to raise the bar of the quality of education provided to underprivileged children with an aim of giving them an opportunity to change their lives. The introduction of ideas like paid to learn, fighting malnutrition, and improvising the existing school structures have shown significant improvements in the school enrollments of children as compared to the time when trust got the rights from the respective governments to mange the respective school's administration..

[edit]

Zindagi trust targeted the children trapped in child labor, due to their economical conditions, through this initiative[2]. This initiative was very successful, as this convinced the children to attend the school for the compensation amount and their parents also started taking interest and ensuring that their kids were attending the school. [8][9]

School Reforms

[edit]

In 2007, Zindagi trust initiated the school reform service where the aim was to improvise the existing governmental education system instead of introducing a new system. It started with taking on-board SMB Fatima Jinnah Government Girls School,Karachi[10][11]. The school campuses were in poor condition at the time of adoption. After taking over the management of schools, Zindagi trust's management worked on infrastructure rehabilitation. Broken electric wiring and sewage systems were repaired [9]. Broken furniture was replaced, for facilitating a better learning environment. The abandoned rooms were turned into children activity areas like library, art room and audiovisual room. A fully equipped medical room was also instilled along with a trained, full time, nurse.

This was further followed by administration and academic reforms. Each of the school campus, adopted, had multiple school with different administrations running on the same campus. Managements were consolidated and arranged into teams for more effective performance[9]. To improve the quality of education, coordinators were hired to improvise the existing syllabus. Interactive text books and video based learning methods were introduced[9].

Teacher reform teams were formed to train the existing teachers and enable them to effectively teach the improvised course syllabus[9]. Zindagi trust introduced a finger print based attendance system to ensure the effective attendance of teachers. Also, an evaluation system, for constant monitoring and enhancing the performance of teachers was built.

Student Development Programs

[edit]

Zindagi trust encourage students' creativity by providing the opportunities to experience different sports like cricket, taekwondo and chess[9]. They also encourage the student to showcase their creativity through art programs which resulted in their students winning art competitions, competing with the students from the best schools of the country[12][13][14][15].

Breakfast Program

[edit]

The children coming to government schools, comes from lower income family, and do not have access to healthy nutrition. Initially this caused lots of fainting episodes among the children, surfacing this very critical issue. Trust management came up with this idea of providing breakfast, planned with good nutritious value to fulfil the development needs of the children coming to school and helping them to better focus and work on their studies. Malnutrition was a major concern among the children coming to school, which was taken care by introducing this breakfast program.[16]
