Category:Country data templates

Country data redirects

There is a category for all redirects to country data templates, but it must be added manually and therefore may not contain all existing redirects. For this reason I've generated a list of all country data templates in AWB using PrefixIndex and then used a parser function to keep only the ones that are redirects. The syntax,

determines the redirect target of a page using Module:Redirect, and if the target page title is not the same as the page title (i.e. if it's actually a redirect), it gives a list entry. This list can then be compared with Category:Country data redirects in AWB to know which redirects don't have the category. See this old revision for the actual list (as of 28 February 2014).

Templates without Template:Country showdata

By comparing the list of transclusions of the automatic documentation template {{Country showdata}} (or equivalently, the list of pages in Category:All country data templates) with the list of templates starting with "country data" a list can be generated of country data templates that don't use {{Country showdata}} and therefore are not automatically categorized. The resulting list is then filtered to exclude documentation subpages and compared with Category:Country data redirects to remove redirects.

List as of 23 March 2014 (8 pages)

Template:Country data – a country data template that gets transcluded whenever a flag template is used without (or with an empty) first parameter. It contains all parts of a "standard" country data template, with an invisible image as flag alias, but doesn't use the automatic documentation (I don't know whether the documentation was intentionally omitted).
Template:Country data American Samoa/testcases – testcases page.
Template:Country data Limburg – whenever used it gives a warning to use Template:Country data Limburg (Netherlands) or Template:Country data Limburg (Belgium) instead. Basically a country data disambiguation page.
Template:Country data Māori – consisted of a New Zealand flag icon with a link to the Māori rugby union team. Now converted into an actual country data template and merged with Template:Country data New Zealand Māori.
Template:Country data New Zealand Labour Party – seems to have been created as a hack to display an enlarged logo in the infobox of these two articles. It actually may be better to just change the infobox template so it can show a custom image at the top.
Template:Country data none – deliberately empty so it doesn't render anything at all. In templates where a flag icon is automatically included the alias "none" can be used to disable it.
Template:Country data OC – unused; consists of a piped link to Olympic Council of Ireland. Not sure what it's supposed to be, but I've listed it at TfD.
Template:Country data SA – consisted of the text "SOUTH AFRICA" only; used on several pages. Now redirected to Template:Country data South Africa.

Two-letter-code shortcuts for data templates

Make a list of all country data templates in AWB (pages starting with "Country data" in Template namespace) and save as text file
Copy the file contents into the regex tester, search for # \[\[:Template:Country data .{3,}\]\]\n (all templates with more than three characters after "Country data ") and replace with nothing
Copy the resulting string into the test string box, find # \[\[:Template:Country data (.{2})\]\] and replace with # [[:Template:Country data $1]] → [[{{subst:#invoke:Redirect|main|Template:Country data $1}}]] to add the redirect target to each list entry
Manually (or automatically) remove remaining non-conforming templates (Template:Country data and Template:Country data/doc, and if they would exist, any templates with one-letter names)
