Welcome!

File:Sephiroth.gif Hello, Shoffman11/Archive 1, Welcome to Wikipedia!
I hope you like working here and want to continue. If you need help on how to name new articles, look at Naming Conventions, and for help on formatting the pages visit the Manual of Style. If you need general help, look at Help and the FAQ, and if you can't find your answer there, check the Village pump (for Wikipedia related questions) or the Reference Desk (for general questions). There's still more help at the Tutorial and the Policy Library. Also, don't forget to visit the Community Portal — and if you have any more questions after that, feel free to post them on my talk page.
Additional tips:
Here are some extra tips to help you get around Wikipedia:
  • If you made any edits before you got an account, you might be interested in assigning those to your username.
  • If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills, try the Sandbox.
  • Click on the Edit button on a page, and look at how other editors did what they did.
  • You can sign your name using three tildes, like this: ~~~. If you use four, you can add a datestamp too. Always sign comments on Talk pages, never sign Articles.
  • You might want to add yourself to the New User Log.
  • If your first language isn't English, try Wikipedia:Contributing to articles outside your native language.
Happy editing!

Chicago Vote

A month for a vote (the chicago main picture) is pretty long. However, I understand your concern, that most people who visit/edit the chicago article do not check the talk page every day. As such, I've submitted a request for comment on the picture. Hopefully that will help us come to a consensus sooner. The reason that we made the date much sooner was because we wanted to get Chicago peer reviewed again so we could submit this again to be a Featured Article candidate. Thanks, -- BMIComp (talk, HOWS MY DRIVING) 17:25, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

  • So you think a month is too long, and I think a week is too short. Let's try to compromise. I think we should consider the start of the vote to be July 17, the day the vote started in its current form (the 13th was when it was first proposed but was only planned to be open for 24hrs, which was deemed to short). The July 17 revision is when the current ending date was set (20:52, 17 July 2005 Dralwik). I would be happy with 15 days (half a month) from that date. That would put the ending date at Monday, August 1, 2005 (12 days sooner than was originally posted). Also, couldn't the article still be peer edited while we vote on the image. If it appears on WP:PR more people will likely see the vote and can express their opinion and vote on the best image. The more people that vote for the best image now, we will have less people disliking the image when we go to have Chicago on WP:FAC. What do you think? Regards, Shoffman11 18:29, 23 July 2005 (UTC)
  • With all due respect, a vote is only official if it is noted in the proper voting section. Although I agree that HollyAm voiced support for your picture and said she would vote for it, an official vote was never made. If we take comments as votes, then many more votes would have to be taken from the general comments section. I feel it is much easier to only count a vote if someone actually votes. I have sent HollyAm a message regarding this change and I hope she will return and officially vote for a picture. I have nothing against your image, I actually think it is tied as the best one of the selection, however, this is not about personal opinion, I am trying to keep this vote fair and as simple as possible. In responce to your comments regarding the votes that I (I did it, not BMIComp, although I discussed it with him) moved down to the new voting section, that was different because those were signed votes that were made in the old voting section. We felt that those people should not be disenfranchised because we reorganized the vote. We specifically decided not to move unsigned votes, even if they were in the correct section, or "vote like comments" from the General Comments section, as the name General Comments would suggest that the area is for comments and not votes.
As for the time change, that was also discussed when the vote was first started. It was origionally only supposed to go on for 24 hours, but we compromised and extended it. The current date, July 28th is an additional compromise. Please understand that we are trying to expedite this process because we do intend to nominate this article as a featuredarticle candidate ASAP, and this picture is the last hurdle. Please discuss any further change before implenting it.
Thanks,

  • I see your points, and that's why I only copied her vote because it was signed (there was another unsigned that I didn't). I agree that it is easier to count votes if they are all displayed in one section. I also sent HollyAM a message when I added my picture as Picture #4. If the vote is everyone against me at this point for changing the deadline, then just leave it as July 28 (but update the other section of the vote above the one you changed so they're all the same).

I by no means intended to be agressive either, and greatly apologize if I came off as such. This enitre voting process, in my opinion, ahs been much more complicated then I had hoped. As I said, I very much liked your image and may even vote for it if #2 does not get any more support. I also think that even if itdoesnt win, both yours and #s 3 and 2 should be worked into the article. The reason I didnt want her vote copied is becuase I felt it might set a precedent and other votes that might have even less validity might be moved down, and since it was such an animated discussion, this would not have been a good thing. I have noticed that you have been quite active in the Chicago WikiProject and very much appreciate your contributions, and look forward to working with you even more.
