Weekly Progress
[edit]Week # | Accomplishments | Set Backs | Time Spent |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Setting up Wikipedia Account
Finishing Section 4 of the "Wahlwort" Translation |
Unfamiliarity with the topic of "Wahlwörter" made the translation of the section more difficult. | 40 mins |
2 | Starting the translating Jakobuskirche (Oberkotzau) page | The many links to German pages that also did not have translations made adding proper links to the translation difficult | 90 mins |
3 | Finishing the translation of the Jakobuskirche page | Figuring out how to add pictures and categories to the page was a challenge, but with the help of the class' guide page I was able to do it | 90 mins |
4 | Began translation of the Tankō page | The page's use of Japanese terminology, and the complex nature of the article's content, made translation of the page difficult | 110 mins |
5 | Finished translation of the Tankō page | Translating the rest of the page was not too difficult | 80 mins |
6 | Translation of the Augustin Lippi page | Some of the people and places referenced by the German article were relatively obscure, and did not have proper links attached | 100 mins |
7 | Translation of the Allophyes corsica page | The article was very scientific nature, and some biology terms in German did not have clear English translations | 100 mins |
8 | Translation of the Trier English Drama page | The article was fairly simple to translate | 60 mins |
9 | Finalizing the last two pages in order to turn them in for credit | Not being able to get checking from the professor made things slightly more difficult, but in the end my previous experience with the pages I translated before it made me feel fairly prepared | 90 mins |
10 | Working on the Hasenleiten Parish Church page | The structure of the page was difficult to translate to a certain degree | 90 mins |
11 | Finishing Hasenleiten Parish Church translation | The remainder of the article was not exceedingly challenging | 50 mins |
12 | Ernst Philipp Rosenkranz translation | The article was not too challenging to translate, save for one source which had to be reformatted into English | 45 mins |
Assignment 1: Wahlwort Section 4
The rationale for choosing more or less meaningless German words as wahlworts (specifically compound words, often compound nouns) as opposed to random text such as CIHJT UUHML, was so that the authorized recipient could verify that his deciphering of the radio message was error-free. However, according to regulations, wahlworts were required to be entirely unrelated to the content of the actual radio message, and to not “infringe on discipline and order.”[1]
Wahlworts were also used in conjunction with other ciphering machines such as the "Geheimschreiber“ ("Secret Writer") Siemens & Halske T52.[3]
