[edit]

YBhg Tuan  Shanmugam Ramiah is a Malaysian politician who founded the party Kongres Keadilan India Malaysia (KKIM) in 2018. Shanmugam was a former commercial airline cabin crew for Malaysia Airlines and Air Atlanta before venturing into politics in the late 2010s.

Early life

[edit]

Shanmugam was born on 7 August 1970 in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur. Graduating from SMK Vivekananda in 1987, Shanmugam went on to pursue his London Chamber of Commerce and Industry qualification at the JASA Institute Kuala Lumpur (Jasa Accountancy Centre) the following year.

Shanmugam went on to join Malaysia Airlines as a cabin crew after completing his cabin crew and in-flight service training in 1995. Subsequently, Shanmugam completed a Dedicated First Class Air Steward Programme with MAS in 2000.

Starting his new career with Air Atlanta in 2001, Shanmugam completed his training for Cabin Crew Purses in accordance with the Joint Aviation Requirement - Operator certification and supervision (JAR OPS 1). IN 2005, he completed his training for Purses, a code sharing course, under European Air.

With the abundance of experience acquired through his time in the aviation industry as travelled around the world, Shanmugam obtained a new perspective on what needs to be done for the Malaysian Indian community. One of his many beginnings in holding a say on how the nation functions for the people, was when he joined the Malaysian Timber Council as a member of the board of trustee[1], subsequently being appointed as a member of audit and integrity for the council.

Political Career

[edit]

Shanmugam’s growing concern for the Malaysian Indian Community encouraged him to establish a number of organisations for the welfare of the people. From the year 2015 to 2018, Shanmugam started off by listening closely to the plight of the people from a small housing community in Puchong Jaya, Selangor. He was appointed as the chairman of Persatuan Penduduk Resident Helang, a home-owners association in Puchong Jaya.

In 2018, Shanmugam founded Kongres Keadilan India Malaysia (KKIM)[2][3], a Malaysian Indian political party aimed at upholding the dignity and pride of the Indian community in Malaysia, while promoting strengthened unity among the members of the community.

KKIM was successfully registered with the Registrar of Societies (RoS) and given permission to operate on 28 May 2019. Currently, the party has 30,000 members.

Pursuing his goals of providing the necessary welfare support for the community, Shanmugam went on to be the president for the charitable organisation, Pertubuhan Kebajikan Sosial Dan Pembangunan Masyarakat Qaseh Amal[4]. The organisation has a total of 500 registered members at the moment.
