Squline[1] is an online learning platform created to reinvent the language learning experience. Founded by Tomy Yunus Tjen as CEO and Yohan Limerta as CTO in 2013. Now, Squline is focusing on teaching foreign languages, especially English, Mandarin, Japanese, and Indonesian Language.
History
[edit]Began with Tomy and Yohan encounter in Beijing in 2009 when they were Mandarin language students. In Beijing, they met other foreign students who had taken Mandarin language courses before, but still hadn’t satisfied with the results, hence they had to go to Beijing to learn more about Mandarin language with the native speakers.
At the beginning, Tomy and Yohan didn’t understand Mandarin language at all but after going to Mandarin language school in Beijing for six months, they got the same results as the fellow Indonesian students who had taken Mandarin language courses for years in Indonesia. This was due to a lack of encouragement to practice the language that had been learned in everyday life. Therefore, Tomy concluded that learning foreign languages had to be taught by native speakers.
To facilitate foreign language learning between students and teachers who are native speakers, Tomy and Yohan founded Squline in 2013. Then, in 2014, Squline joined Ciputra GEPI Incubator. In 2016, Squline received Pre-Series A activities from Prasetia Dwidharma, an investment company from Budi Setiadharma.
In November 2016, Squline launched a Japanese Language Course in collaboration with Aki no Sora as an experienced Japanese teaching provider partner. At present, Squline has also opened Indonesian language classes for overseas and expatriate users in Indonesia. Squline already has users from Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam, Korea, the Philippines, Japan, Australia and the United States.
Platform
[edit]Squline[2] is designed to replicate language learning experiences such as direct learning in the country of origin. All sessions are presented with a one-on-one system through video calls, this is to provide the best conditions for their uses and remain effective but still fun.
Users not only learn by watching and listening to the teachers through video call but also provided materials that have been adapted to their competencies. Now, Squline is available on websites and application for smartphone users, therefore, learning new languages can be easier.
Types of Classes
[edit]Group Class
[edit]Students will learn the language together in a room as a group and the teacher will teach via video call feature. For group class type, Squline targets foreign companies, government institutions, or international schools as clients.
Private Class
[edit]Private class is run with a one-on-one method where users learn languages with instructors through the video call feature. It is different from the group class. In a private class, one teacher teaches one language to one student.
