Hardie Mine Local Fauna is a local fauna in Georgia containing animals that lived during the Late Eocene.

Description

[edit]

The local fauna is named after the inactive kaolin mine located near Gordon, Georgia that the material comes from. These sediments are part of the Clinchfield Formation which lays above layers of non-fossiliferous layers of kaolin clays. Fossils that make up the local fauna have been found in the surface spoil piles from when the mine was still active. Though invertebrate fossils had been found throughout these piles, it wouldn't be until 1994 that a diverse assemblage of vertebrates had been found there as well.[1]
