Zaloga (2002):
Detects US ICBMs ten mins quicker than ground based radars. Molniya orbit as there was difficulty in developing sensitive enough IR detectors so they could distinguish missiles from the background IR level of earth and sun reflecting off clouds.
2nd gen from 26 April 1990 related to Lavochkin Spektr design
1973 Council of Ministers authorised. deployment by 1978. Infrared telescopes by GOI imeni S.I. Vavilova
Manufactured by Leningrad Optical Mechanical Association (LOMO). Lavochkin did the satellite aspect.
TsNII Kometa design
Test flights began 9 sept 1972 but sensor not ready. Trials 1977. Change in sensor 1978.

[edit]Cosmos 520 = prototype Kometa - control, data transfer, processing Lavochkin - space craft Optics - NI Vavilov state optics institute
experimental launches until 1977
Complete HEO - 9 spacecraft 2 revolutions every day apogee observing US - 35N 10E
1998 eastern sat control centre opened (pivan-1?). only in trial mode.
Paleologue (2005)
[edit]launch on warning
9 orbital planes separated by 40 deg. 63 deg N - detects infrared signature of missile when on apogee of orbit.
2001 fire caused loss of 2 sats - 2340 and 2351. and 2 more a year later - lose station if don't get communication after 2 or 3 orbits.
Can see if not operational as drifting.
cosmos 2397 - tank leakage. lost control - drifting 0.7 deg E a day
