Citizens Utility Board
[edit]Citizens Utility Board (CUB) is Illinois' nonprofit utility consumer advocacy organization, which represent the interests of residential utility customers across the state. The organization operates a consumer hotline that provides assistance to consumers who have encountered issues with their utilities.[1]
Founding
[edit]The Illinois General Assembly created the Citizens Utility Board in 1983 to represent the interests of residential utility customers throughout the state through consumer education, advocacy, and assistance.[2] The legislature created CUB as a membership-based organization. An initial $100,000 loan of “seed money” provided by the state was repaid by CUB on time and with interest.
Consumer Advocacy
[edit]CUB is part of the Illinois Clean Jobs Coalition,[3] which helped pass the Illinois Climate and Equitable Jobs Act in September 2021.[4] CUB regularly releases free publications that help consumers navigate their utility services and clean energy options, such as electric vehicles.[5]
