My mother's grandfather bought a lot and built a house in Seaview, Washington, in 1883, and the family has been spending summers there ever since. Many of our family stories--some of which we've heard hundreds of times, and date back to the late 1800s--are set in Seaview and on the Long Beach peninsula. My mother talked of riding the boat down the Columbia River from Portland to Astoria before there was a railroad or highway to the coast. She said the boat would get caught in the fog and they'd just float along, looking for trees so they could get their bearings. Then they'd dock at Astoria, transfer their trunks to a ferry, and ride across the Columbia River to Astoria--the river estuary is about seven miles wide at that point. Much of what I know of Seaview is from dozens of family members and Seaview locals talking during long sessions sitting on a porch on summer afternoons.
