The Seattle roll is a type of sushi roll created in Seattle, Washington. It is typically made with raw salmon, cucumber, cream cheese, sushi rice, and seaweed.

Seattle Roll

A Seattle roll is a makizushi roll similar to the California roll. It was popularized in Seattle due to the Seattle hot dog, where it's known for its cream cheese filling. It can be found among many different restaurants in Seattle and has become a favorite of food critics.

Ingredients

The main ingredients in this roll are cream cheese, cucumber, avocado, raw salmon, and masago or tobiko. Variations include ingredients such as smoked or seared salmon, asparagus, sesame seeds, variable sauces, or it can be tempura'd. It is a popular roll that varies amongst Seattle restaurants.

Seattle sushi rolls are made with the same key preparation techniques as most sushi rolls. This includes making the sushi rice, preparing the fillings, forming the maki, and cutting the roll into individual slices.

Make Seattle sushi rolls:

- Make sushi rice

- Fill with raw salmon, cucumber, avocado, and cream cheese.

- Form the sushi using a makisu (see image on right)

- Cut into small sushi slices

- Top with masago or tobiko

- Serve with wasabi and ginger

History

The identity of the creator of the Seattle roll is disputed, with different chefs in Seattle given credit. Seattle rolls are created in restaurants throughout Seattle, with different variations of how the chefs choose to create it.

The Seattle Roll was popularized by the unique recipe of the Seattle hot dog. The Seattle Dog[2] was first created in the 1990s and sold throughout multiple hot dog vendors in Pioneer Square, Seattle. It was first called the Bagel Dog, a combination of both a bagel and a hot dog. More hot dog vendors around Seattle began to catch on and start making cream cheese dogs, some with their own additions such as caramelized onions. The earliest mention of the "Seattle Dog" according to Seattle Weekly[3] was mentioned in print by The Stranger[4] in 1999, which then led to Seattle being known for cream cheese dogs. This then became the ingredient Seattle was unique for, thus encouraging other "Seattle" items such as the Seattle roll.
