Dr BA Thango is a South African Electrical Engineer, Researcher and lecturer.

Bonginkosi A. Thango obtained his Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) in Electrical Engineering in 2017 at the Tshwane University of Technology, South Africa. In 2019, he was awarded Cum Laude for Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) in the same University. In 2021, he further completed his Doctor of Engineering (D.Eng.) degree with the same University. He is professionally registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a professional Engineering Technologist. His research interest includes Finite Element Method modelling, condition monitoring of transformers, Renewable Energy, Smart Data Analysis and Mathematical modelling.

Early life and Education:

Bonginkosi Thango was born in Ermelo, Gert Sibande District Municipality in Mpumalanga province, Republic of South Africa. He completed his primary and secondary education at Umsebe Primary School and Lindile Secondary School respectively. After receiving a National Diploma and a Bachelor of Technology in Electrical Engineering at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), eMalahleni campus, he was employed by a transformer manufacturing company in 2017 and he moved to Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa. He started his career as a research and development technologist.

In 2018, Bonginkosi enrolled for a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering at the TUT main campus and was awarded cum laude in the 2019 graduation ceremony.  In the same year, He was awarded the post-graduate scholarship to further pursue his Doctor of Engineering degree.

In 2021, Bonginkosi He was awarded professional registration by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a professional Engineering Technologist (Pr. Tech Eng.).

By the end of 2021, he successfully defended his Doctor of Engineering degree. His research interest includes various techno-economic aspects of transformers for renewable energy. During his candidature Bonginkosi has published over thirty scientific publications in 8 different countries locally and internationally as a lead author.

In his thesis entitled, “EVALUATING THE EFFECTS OF HARMONICS IN LARGE-SCALE SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC PLANT TRANSFORMERS”, Bonginkosi focused his investigations on addressing the techno-economic challenges of commercializing transformers for solar photovoltaic (PV) applications in South Africa.

The most significant contribution of the research was the development of various novel analytical, numerical and regression models to optimally design transformers that meet the operational conditions of solar PV.

The results of this research have been published in over twenty international and local conferences and eight internal peer-reviewed journals. Additionally, two books have been published internationally.
