Berenice III

[edit]

Berenice III (120 to 80 c.) was the queen of Egypt after marrying her uncle Ptolemy X Alexander. [1] She would later go onto rule by herself until she was murdered by her third husband Ptolemy XI Alexander.[2] Much of the information related to Berenice III is difficult to acquire or has been disputed by scholars.[3] She would marry three time to Ptolemy IX, Ptolemy X who was her Uncle and Ptolemy XI. Her thrid husband would murder her after 18 days of ruling together. The reasons for the murder can only be speculated.

Before Berenice III (The Reign of Ptolemy IX Soter)

[edit]

The Ptolemys and Benenice of the era were both Greek and Egyptian. Their heritage became a very prominate symbol in their reign taking from both of their parent cultures and intertwining it into their rule.[4] Benenice's father was Ptolemy IX Soter.

The Reign of Berenice III

[edit]

There is very little information about the Reign of Berenice III but it has been understood that it was under her father death that was the catalysts for her rise to power.[5] Traditionally, it would be the male heirs that inherited the throne and though women have ruled in Egypt before, Berenice had to marry to stabilize her authority and whether she had the choice in this matter is unclear. To ensure tradition, Berenice III married her uncle Ptolemy X Alexander. [6] Though this marriage it was able to stabilize the the throne and restrict any debate over who would inherit the crown it did not grant her the status of Pharaoh. Instead she was second two her husband, who was granted sovereignty over their lands. Though she was married to her uncle it would not be long until Ptolemy X Alexander would die and a new suiter would be purposed.

It is hard to understand what Berenice III managed to do during her reign do to the lack of sources on the matter. However, it is clear that she was popular amongst her people.[2]

The Death of Berenice III

[edit]

In her twilight years, Berenice married her last husband Ptolemy XI Alexander. Shortly after the marriage, she was killed by her new husband.[5]
