Experiences and Perspectives

https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/15532739.2018.1502711

- Proper/Appropriate terms: gender identity varied

- evidence of disregard by HCP ignorance (lack of trans care knowledge)

- identity affirmation is key in HCP communication, such as correct pronouns and preferred name (discomfort, uncertainty, and awkwardness sensed as denial of trans identity)

- sensitivity: acknowledgements and measures to reduce discomfort with PE, use of neutral language for gendered anatomy, upholding privacy and medical documentation, and being thoroughly informative regarding TPX or TPX options.

- underlying cisnormativity and transphobic systems in healthcare

- evidence that patients are selective with the info they disclose to HCP in order to improve likelihoof of receiving desited treatments, concealing their trans identity when accessing non-trans healthcare, and/or avoiding sometimes necessary medical services to avoid perceived or actual discrimination.

- participant recommendations: asked for preferred pronouns and name at every visit, notation in EMR/EHR, trans friendliness by visible posters or digital publications, elimination of sex-segregation where possible or include of trans-specific spaces, removal of sex designations from medical documentation unless necessary, and referrals to trans friendly providers.
