Wikipedia Topic: Temple of Janus(Roman Forum)

1) Temple, Nicholas. “St. Peter's Basilica: Orientation and Succession.” In Revovatio Urbis: Architecture, Urbanism, and Ceremony in the Rome of Julius II, 189–94. New York, NY: Routledge, 2011.

This source will be used to add information about the later historical use and legends of the temple, Janus, and the Gates of Janus. On pages 189-194 it shows the use of the Roman legends of Janus by the later Popes of the Roman Church(16th century). It also discusses the use of relics from the temple, which were used to justify moving the base of Christianity to Rome. The Wikipedia page doesn’t currently have any of this information, so I will create a section (potentially) called “Later historical contexts” in order to present it.

2) Nabulsi, Karma. “High Priests of the Temple of Janus: The Martial Traditions of War.” In Traditions of War: Occupation, Resistance, and the Law, 102–26. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1999.

This source will also be used to add information to the “Later historical contexts” section I will create. Between pages 102 and 126 it talks about the influence of the Roman Empire in general, as well as the legend of the Temple and Gates of Janus on later Martialist traditions in Great Britain. Although quite small, I think this is an interesting connection to add to the article.

3)Coarelli, Filippo. “Roman Forum.” In Rome and Environs: An Archaeological Guide, 51. Berkeley: University of California Press, 2014.

This source will be used to add information to the “Lead” of the article. On page 51, it contains information on the location of the Temple in relation to other landmarks in the Roman Forum, as well as 2 theories on the original use of the Temple(a bridge over the Velabrum, or a gate to the city itself). None of this information is included in the Wikipedia article and it would make a valuable addition.

4) Green, S J. “Multiple Interpretation of the Opening and Closing of the Temple of Janus: A Misunderstanding of Ovid ‘Fasti’ 1.281.” Mnemosyne, June 2000, 305–6.

This source will be used to add to the section “Gates of the Janus” in the existing Wikipedia article. It contains primary source descriptions of the use of the temple(which I will also cite in the article) and the rules that governed the gates on pp.305-306. There is information about when the gates were open or closed in the Wikipedia article, but there isn’t a description of why they would be yet, so I plan on adding that.

5)Syme, Ronald. “Problems about Janus.” The American Journal of Philology 100, no. 1 (1979): 188-212.

This source will be used to add to the “Ancient descriptions” section of the Wikipedia article, as well as the “Gates of the Janus” section. It contains excerpts of writing by Livy on p.189 which is not included in the Wikipedia article yet, as well as excerpts from Horace and Virgil describing the legend of Janus.
