User:Ritchie333/NOTCENSORED isn't just about boobies
This is an essay. It contains the advice or opinions of one or more Wikipedia contributors. This page is not an encyclopedia article, nor is it one of Wikipedia's policies or guidelines, as it has not been thoroughly vetted by the community. Some essays represent widespread norms; others only represent minority viewpoints. |
WP:NOTCENSORED is a frequently-cited policy link that explains that it is impossible for a general-purpose encyclopedia with a worldwide readership to contain views nobody will be offended by.
Often, the policy is used to justify the use of gratuitous use of pornography or other unnecessary images. e.g.: "I don't think the article on [insert suitable topic here] is something I want my children to read." "Hah! WP:NOTCENSORED!" In my view, this misses the true value of the policy, which is far more effective when used on the following viewpoints:
- Belfast, the largest city in Northern Ireland, is part of the United Kingdom.
- Coventry was once in Warwickshire. It is now part of the county of West Midlands.
- Cyril Smith was a high-profile politician who was popular with the people of Rochdale, winning many national elections.
- Chepstow has been anachronistically referred to as part of England, but since 1974 has unambiguously been part of Wales.
- The Holocaust article should contain pictures of mass graves, executions and starvation to educate the reader's understanding of the topic.
- North Korea has a bad human rights abuse record.
- Paul Gascoigne has had numerous problems due to alcohol abuse.
- Tiger Woods' extramarital affair was exposed by the National Enquirer.
- Donald Trump has been accused of several cases of sexual harassment
(Note : the presence of these views doesn't mean I agree with all of them; indeed, a couple of these I avoid going anywhere near talking about them! Rather I am happy that Wikipedia allows them to exist)
