GROB-WERKE GmbH & Co. KG is the holding company of the Grob Group. The Family-owned business is active in the fields of universal machines, system solutions, electromobility, additive manufacturing, automation and digitalization. The plant has its headquarters in Mindelheim in the Upper Swabian district of Unterallgäu.

History

[edit]

GROB-WERKE was founded by Ernst Grob in Munich in 1926. Initially the focus was on the production of machine tools and from 1935 onwards on internal combustion engines, which meant that the company was considered "important to the war effort" during the Second World War. Between 50 and 100 prisoners of war were used as forced laborers, who were housed in a separate camp on the company premises at Hofmannstrasse 50. In 1944, the plant was extensively destroyed by Allied air raids on Munich and rebuilt in 1945. GROB-WERKE is one of the contributors to the Foundation Initiative of German Industry for the Compensation of Forced Laborers.

Burkhart Grob (* March 26, 1926; † May 20, 2016) then headed the company from 1952. In 1956, the first foreign plant was founded in São Paulo (Brazil). In 1968, the main plant was built in Mindelheim, where the company began manufacturing assembly lines. In 1976, the plant in Munich was finally closed down completely and the company headquarters moved entirely to Mindelheim. In 2017, GROB purchased the Italian machine and plant manufacturer for electric motors DMG meccanica in Turin (Italy) and thus entered the field of electric mobility. In the course of his career, Burkhardt Grob was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon, the Bavarian Order of Merit and the Bavarian Constitutional Medal. Since 2016, Christian Grob has continued the company in the third generation as the new Chairman of the Supervisory Board, and Florian Grob has been the new company owner since 2016.

Company structure

[edit]

Until 2006, GROB-WERKE consisted of the independent Machine Tool and Aerospace divisions. The Aerospace division was sold in 2006 and subsequently traded as Grob Aerospace AG, since 2009 as Grob Aircraft AG. The Mindelheim site has been the main plant of Grob-Werke since 1976 and is therefore also the company's headquarters. The Mindelheim plant has a production area of more than 199,000 m2.

In addition to its main plant in Mindelheim, the company has production facilities in Bluffton (Ohio) (USA), Dalian (China), São Paulo (Brazil) and Pianezza (Italy) and manufactures machining centers and assembly equipment, digitization and automation solutions, as well as interlinking systems for production and assembly lines. Its specialty is the design and creation of complete production lines for engines, vehicle transmissions, injection pumps and the like. Grob is thus an equipment supplier to the automotive industry and its suppliers worldwide. In the course of the green turn, Grob has also established a new focus: has entered the development of electromobility and has adapted the company structure accordingly. The field of electromobility has been successively expanded by Grob in recent years. In addition, a cooperation agreement was concluded with the Dürr Group and Manz AG in September 2022. In this way, Grob-Werke aims to expand the area of production technology for Li-Ion batteries. In 2022, GROB also started the area of additive manufacturing.
