Joanna van der Gracht de Rosado ...

Joanna van der Gracht de Rosado (born 9 May 1953 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) is a Mexican educator, writer and public spokesperson. Born in Vancouver, BC, Canada, her interest in Latin American culture began in 1971 when she accepted an assistant English teacher position in southern Peru. In that period, she also began exploring other South American countries. Returning to Canada in 1973, she worked for an airline and other tourism- related companies until moving permanently to Mérida, Yucatán, México in 1976. From 1980-1992, she worked as the Mérida correspondent for the Mexico City News newspaper. She attained her English as a Second Language certification at the Benjamin Franklin Institute in Merida. She started the International Women’s Club of Merida and participated in the city’s tourism promotional initiatives. The births of her son Carlos in 1981 and daughter Maggie in 1985 gave her entry into the “sacred, spiritual sisterhood,” giving her an “insider’s understanding” of México, she has stated. In 1990, she and her husband founded Tecnología Turística Total, A.C. (TTT), a Tourism and Modern Languages College. During her 20-year career at TTT, she worked as the college’s administrative director and started the international student programs and Life Long Learning options. Her first book, Tomando Agua de Pozo – the Neophyte’s Guide to Yucatan (2007) was well received, and her second, Magic Made in Mexico–Living Your Dream in Mexico (2010), has become a must-read for international residents in Latin America. She is currently working on her first novel If You Only Knew, set in Mexico City and Mérida. She lives and writes in Mérida and travels frequently around Mexico and abroad.
