EVALUATION SYSTEM OF CBSE AND CHSE
There are various types of boards, central boards and different state boards from where students study in order to gain knowledge, skills and build character. I am going to talk about two different types of boards CBSE and CHSE. Their full forms are as such, CBSE is CENTRAL BOARD OF SECONDARY EDUCATION and CHSE IS COUNCIL OF HIGHER SECONDARY EDUCATION, which is extensively used in Odisha.
I am going to talk about the evaluative system and bring out some of the differences between the evaluation of both the boards. And which one between the two according to me is more liable. Both the boards differ in terms of its grading system or structure and most importantly their approach while assessing students performance. First we will look into its Evaluation Strategy:
CBSE-It follows a continuous and comprehensive evaluation(CCE) approach, giving importance to both formative as well as summative assessment. This was it gives a 360 degree evaluation focusing on both academic as well as co-curricular performance. It includes multiple choice questions, short answer questions as well as creative ones. As I remember we used to get story writing in our own way in English exams.
CHSE- It primarily focuses on summative evaluation through conducting final exams. It relatively focuses less in internal assessments or co-curricular activities. It has a traditional approach giving prior reference to rote memorization and theoretical aspects. The question paper contains direct questions but their syllabus is vast as compared to CBSE pattern.
GRADING SYSTEM:
CBSE-It uses a grading system(9 point scale) for classes upto 10th in order to reduce the rising stress of students and competition.Grades are assigned based on performance bands such as someone who scores between 91-100 will be graded A1, someone who scores between 81-90 will be graded A2. For class 12, raw scores and percentages are used. Marks moderation is applied to normalise results.
CHSE- It uses a percentage based evaluation system with raw scores directly impacting the final result. There is no grading system, students are solely judged on the basis of marks they obtained in the exams. Evaluation is more straightforward, with less focus on standardization compared to CBSE.
QUESTION PAPER PATTERN:
CBSE- It includes application based, HOTS(Higher order thinking skills). Questions generally encourages critical thinking, reasoning and real life application based questions.
CHSE- It is more theory based and contains direct questions. Papers often emphasize factual recall and focuses of factual knowledge rather than problem solving and analytical skills.
OVERALL RESULT CALCULATION:
CBSE- It combines both internal assessments and final results and form the overall scorecard. Marks moderation policy make sure it's consistent across states as well.
CHSE- Final result are predominantly based on performance in board exams. And moderation policy is less sophisticated.
CONCLUSION
CBSE is more balanced and suitable for those who are aiming for competitive exams like NEET, JEE as direct questions from NCERT are asked in those exams. While CHSE follows more of a traditional approach while dealing with evaluation criteria. It depends person to person and their convenience to choose any board of their interest and need.
