Which notables advocated different sides in these disputes?

  • George Q. Cannon (First Presidency under Woodruff) believed himself obliged to avenge the martyrs (1889).
  • Wilford Woodruff (new Prophet) stated God is asked to avenge martyrs, and isn't implying just Joseph/Hyrum and a mob was responsible, not the nation (Nov 1889).
  • August Lundstrom (ex-Mormon) testified that God is asked to avenge martyrs (1904).
  • David H. Cannon (St. George Temple President) believed God avenges the martyrs (1912).
