Monty's is a American raw bar restaurant located in two locations, on the Miami Beach Marina[1] in the South Beach neighborhood of Miami Beach, Florida and the main location next to Miami City Hall in Coconut Grove, Florida.
The original Monty's was opened in Coconut Grove, Florida on the site of a former gas station, across from Dinner Key in 1969.[2] The place quickly became a favorite location for local politicians, and other businesspeople to conduct business meetings, discussing city policy changes and last minute deal arraigments.[2] Monty's was convenient for them as Miami City Hall is located at Dinner Key.
Expansion
[edit]In 1988, a second Monty's location opened Downtown in the Miami River, causing Miami police officers to guard the grand opening of the location, because of expected high-demand.[2] In the early 1990s, high-profile Cuban-American lawyer Manny Diaz bought a share of the restaurant. Diaz used Monty's to raise his political profile, partnering up with prominent Miami lawyers Kendall Coffey and Jose Onagten to form their own law firm.[3] By 1998, Monty's started to expand out of the South Florida area, opening locations in Orlando, Tampa's Ybor City neighborhood, and in Key West.[2]
Financial problems
[edit]By 2004, the Coconut Grove location was owned by Miami mayor Manny Diaz.
