Alice Coachman:First Female African American High Jumper

        Alice Coachman was an Olympic Gold Medalist,and she was born in 1926 in Albany,Georgia.Alice liked to run and jump and she was good at it!When she was in middle school,she vaulted 5' 4 1/2" in the high jump.She was close to a world record.
       At the age of 13,Alice won 22 competitions and also won outdoor AAU championships 9 years in a row!She also won indoor championships for 3 years.Alice won the 50 meter dash in every competition from 1942-1947.In the middle of 1944,she tied the 50 meter dash world record of 6.4 seconds.
     In 1948,she made the United States Women's Olympic Team to be held in London.She was the first African-American woman to win an Olympic gold  medal for the high jump at the age of 22.She was the first African-American woman to prove herself as an outstanding sprinter and the best female high jumper in the country.
