Construction and Opening
[edit]Great Western Railway
[edit]The GWR had been opened as far as Reading on 30 March 1840.[1] It first entered Oxfordshire when the line was extended to Steventon on 1 June 1840, and there were also stations at Pangbourne, Goring and Wallingford Road.[2] The line was extended to Faringdon Road on 20 July 1840,[3] and to a temporary station known as Wootton Bassett Road, situated where the line crossed Hay Lane (grid reference SU109824) between Swindon and Wootton Bassett, on 17 December 1840; there was only one intermediate station, at Shrivenham.[4]
Further intermediate stations were opened at Didcot on 12 June 1844; at Uffington in 1864 and at Wantage Road. Wallingford Road was renamed Moulsford on 2 July 1866, and was replaced by the present Cholsey station (then known as Cholsey and Moulsford) on 29 February 1892.
