"Savage" is a song recorded by South Korean girl group Aespa for their debut extended play (EP) of the same name. Composed by Kirsten Collins, Jia Lih, Yoo Young-jin, and Hautboi Rich with Korean lyrics adapted by Yoo Young-jin, the trap genre song was released as the group's first single from the EP on October 5, 2021 by SM Entertainment., along with its accompanying music video.

Background and release

After four months, it was announced that Aespa will be releasing their first extended play (EP).[1] The EP will have a total of six songs with various genres, including the title track "Savage".[2] On September 23 to 24, 2021, teaser images of the members were uploaded.[3][4] By September 25, a group teaser image was released on various social media accounts of the group.[5] The song had its official digital release on October 5, along with the EP of the same name.[6]

Composition

"Savage" was composed by Kirsten Collins, Jia Lih, and Hautboi Rich, along with Yoo Young-jin, who also wrote the Korean lyrics of the song.[7] On an online press conference held to commemorate the release of Aespa's first EP, Karina revealed that Lee Soo-man directed the chorus part of the song and said that the "Zu zu zu zu" segement of the song was recorded by Yoo.[8][9] Giselle stated that on their song, they will earnestly fight with the Black Mamba.[1]

Musically, the song was described as a song with "eclectic blend of generes, including trap, dubstep and intense power balladry with "drums and basses" as the main focus.[10][11] Carmen Chin of NME noted the song for its hip-hop beats that are fused with the "crunchy hyperpop synths", while also mentioning the "catchy chorus" that makes full use of a sing-talk chorus.[12] It was composed in the key of A major, with a tempo of 147 beats per minute.[13] The lyrics contains Aespa's worldview where the group and their avatar, aes, are going to Kwangya, with the help of their assistant naevis in confronting the Black Mamba.[14]

Commercial performance

"Savage" debuted at position 4 on South Korea's Gaon Digital Chart with chart issue dated October 3–9, 2021.[15] The song also debuted at positions 3, 8, and 62 on the component Download Chart, Gaon Streaming Chart, and Gaon BGM Chart, respectively.[16][17][18] It also debuted at position 37 on Billboard's K-pop Hot 100 in the chart issue dated October 16, 2021.[19] In Japan, the song debuted at position 60 on Billboard Japan Hot 100 in the chart issue dated October 16, 2021.[20] The song also debuted at position 95 the component Top Streaming Songs chart.[21] In Singapore, the song debuted at position 15 on the component Regional Chart.[22] In the United States, the song debuted at position 14 on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales.[23] The song also went on to debut at position 77 on the Billboard Global 200 in the chart issue dated October 16, 2021.[24] It also debuted at position 44 on the Billboard Global Excl. US chart.[25]

On October 4, 2021, a 29-second video teaser for "Savage" was uploaded on the official SM Town channel, with the official video being released two days later.[26] The music video was first released to reporters during Aespa's online press conference to celebrate the release of the group's first EP of the same name.[27] The visual was released on SM Entertainment's official YouTube channel on October 5 to coincide with the digital release of Savage.

Synopsis and reception

The music video for "Savage" sees Aespa teaming up to strike down a translucent-scaled reptile before breaking it down alongside their aes.[28] The group takes on their characters to combat their enemy and meet their ally, Naevis.[29] Following the visual's release, Lindsay Weinberg of E! Online noted the "futuristic, otherworldly style and '90s punk influences" in the group's "dynamic music video", channeling the same energy as MIA's "Bad Girls" (2012).[30] Divyansha Dongre of Rolling Stone India mentioned the mirroring of the music video to the track's sci-fi thematics while also mentioning the "high-budget CGI and polished labyrinthine set designs", concluding that it creates a "visually immersive experience".[31] On October 23, 2021, the music video for the song reached 100 million views on YouTube in 17 days and 30 minutes.[32]
