Like Water received generally positive reviews from music critics. Writing for Beats Per Minute, JT Early described Like Water as an album that "creates a warm and comforting space that shows off Wendy’s emotive, dynamic vocals and gratitude", further adding that it "is so moving and sincere that it finds a way into the stoniest of hearts". Jung Da-yeol of IZM noted Like Water as it "pours out the pain of the heart through music" adding that "you can feel confident in yourself despite the simple composition". Ruby C of NME praised Wendy as she "navigates the ebbs and flows of her first album quite admirably", explaining that "she exudes a genuine warmth through her five-track release" hoping to comfort her fans.
