Colored (Korean물들다; RRMuldeulda) is the second extended play (EP) by South Korean singer Jun Hyo-seong, a member of girl group Secret. The EP was released by TS Entertainment on March 28, 2016, distributed by LOEN Entertainment. It contains six songs, including the single "Find Me" featuring D.Action of hip hop duo Untouchable.

Release and promotion

[edit]

Colored was released on March 28, 2016, ten months after Jun Hyo-seong's first EP Fantasia. It was released in two versions, the normal edition and the limited edition. Jun helped design the covers, which feature Pantone's 2016 Colors of the Year, "serenity" and "rose quartz".[1] A music video for the single "Find Me" was released in conjunction with the EP.[2] That same day, Jun held a showcase at Yes24 Muv Hall in Hongdae, Seoul, which was broadcast live via Naver's V app.[3][4] She then promoted the album on music shows, starting with SBS MTV's The Show on March 29, where she performed "Dear Moon" and "Find Me".[5][6] She concluded promotion for the EP on April 27 with a performance on Show Champion.[7]

Composition

[edit]

The songwriters for the EP include Marco [ko], Park Su-seok and Park Eun-woo, who produced many of Secret's hit songs.[8] Jun revealed that after she finished filming the television drama series Cheo Yong in October 2015, she struggled with feeling unhappy and decided to pursue happiness by making a new album.[3][4] While working on the album, she realized that if success was her standard for happiness, she would never be happy. She said, "I can lose many small things such as eating a delicious breakfast or basking in the warm sunshine in the morning. All these stories are contained in my music".[3] The songs on the EP relate to the theme of finding happiness. "Follow Me" was chosen to be the first track so the EP would start with a dynamic impression.[9]

The EP's single, "Find Me", features D.Action, a member of TS Entertainment's hip hop duo Untouchable. It is a house dance track arranged with acoustic piano, and was written and composed by songwriting team Startrack, with lyrics co-written by Jun and rap lyrics by D.Action.[3] The song is about searching for happiness and self-esteem, and is the first single with lyrics by Jun. "I Got U" is a retro disco-funk song mixed with synthpop, and is also about searching for happiness. "So Good" was the first song to be recorded, and Jun considered it to have "the image of happiness". It is a dance-pop song about going on a trip with one's lover and making good memories.[9][10]

"Dear Moon" is a slow-tempo ballad with lyrics written by Jun. Jun asked the song's composers to write a sad song for her, because she was going through a hard time. It took her three months to write the lyrics, which were designed to give comfort to those who are lonely. She also said, "I wrote the song because it helped immerse me in the lyrics better while recording it...I realized that I improved a lot musically as I can manage to sing comfortably throughout the whole song."[3] The last track, "Hello", also fit Jun's image of happiness because "hello" is a greeting to loved ones and feels like "I’m glad to meet you finally, my love".[9]
