both members of this club

[edit]

George Bellows American, 1882 - 1925 Both Members of This Club, 1909 oil on canvas, 115 x 160.5 cm (45 1/4 x 63 1/8 in.) Chester Dale Collection 1944.13.1 From the Tour: American Realists of the Early 1900s Object 2 of 4

A robust and vigorous man, George Bellows played semiprofessional baseball before moving to New York City to study art under Robert Henri. There, Bellows found that corruption had made public boxing illegal. Private sport clubs managed to circumvent the law, but they also barred the fighters, who were deemed socially unacceptable, from joining. The title of Both Members of This Club refers to the practice of granting “membership” to boxers only for the duration of their bouts. Bellows indicated his low opinion of the elitist crowd by converting them into grotesque caricatures roaring approval of the bloodshed. Creating a sense of immediacy, three rows of spectators block off our view, and the ringside ropes loom overhead.

The location is Tom Sharkey’s Athletic Club. (Sharkey’s is also the setting for Bellows’ Club Night of 1907 in the National Gallery, the first of his six oil paintings of boxing matches.) The black contestant is Joe Gans, lightweight champion for eight years. Gans’ famous “right punch after blocking a lead” may have led Bellows to record that maneuver for its own sake.

microchromosome http://www.google.com/search?num=100&hs=D8C&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=microchromosome+definition&btnG=Search

Microchromosomes, defined as autosomes smaller than chromosome 8, will be temporarily defined by the first single-copy gene that is assigned to them by fluorescent in-situ hybridization, and given a number greater than 8 and less than 39 roughly consistent with its relative size. This arbitrary definition of microchromosome is based on those that do not have internationally accepted banding patterns (see below). Any gene linked to that locus by physical or genetic means, will be considered to be on that microchromosome. Endogenous viral and other repetitive genes will not be used to define a microchromosome.

Mark Phillips Phillips relation Supernova SN 1997ff was first found, on purpose, by Ron Gilliland of the Space Telescope Science Institute and Mark Phillips of the Carnegie Institute of Washington, during the last week of December, 1997. Gilliland and Phillips turned the Hubble Space Telescope on the same patch of sky recorded in the renowned Hubble Deep Field of typical galaxies, looking for bright spots which, after spurious or doubtful signals had been rigorously eliminated, might prove to be supernovae. They found two good candidates.

http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Mark_Phillips_%28disambiguation%29

Mark Phillips discovered in 1993 that there is relationship between the the absolute magnitudes at maximum light of Type Ia supernovae and the rate of decline of the light curves (Phillips 1993). He introduced the decline rate paramter Delta m_15(B), which is the number of magnitudes that a Type Ia SN declines in its B-band light curve in the first 15 days after maximum light.

Franco died on November 20, 1975, at the age of 82—the same date as José Antonio Primo de Rivera, founder of the Falange. It is suspected that the doctors were ordered to keep him barely alive by artificial means until that symbolic date. The historian, Ricardo de la Cierva, says that on the 19th around 6 p.m. he was told that Franco had already died. Franco is buried at Santa Cruz del Valle de los Caídos, a site built by forced prisoners of the Spanish Civil War as the tomb for unknown soldiers killed

Some of his most well-known works include "The Gross Clinic" (1875) and "The Agnew Clinic" (1889) (both portraits of surgeons), as well as "The Swimming Hole" (1884-1885, also referred to as "Swimming").

SATURN DEVOURING ONE OF HIS SONS (28 K)

FRANCISCO DE GOYA Y LUCIENTES (1746-1828) Mural tranferred to Canvas (146 x 83 cms.) Spanish School 19th Century Hall 38

This disturbing painting is one of the fourteen known as the "black paintings" with which Goya decorated the dining an living rooms of his home, called the "Quinta del Sordo", which he bought in 1819 on the banks of Madrid's Manzanares river. Seventy years after they were painted, the house's owner decided to have them taken down and transferred to canvas given their deteriorated condition. Some years later he donated them to the Spanish state. "Saturn Devouring one of his Sons" was one of the six works decorating the dining room. It depicts a mythological theme- about the god Saturn or Cronos- acting as an allegorical representation of time. The god devoured, as time does to all that it creates, the children born to his wife Cibele: he feared that one would dethrone him.
