Optical isomerism

Simply Optical isomerismis a type of Stereoisomerism. Optical isomerism exhibits because of the difference in the spacial arrangement of atoms around a chiral center, which can lead to form non superimposible mirror images. This pair of mirror images are called as optical isomers or enantiomers. Interesting facts about the optical isomerism is in this case, the isomers shows almost identical chemical and physical properties. They differ in their optical activity, that is this optical isomers can effect on the rotation of polarized light. Optical isomerism have a lot of importance in biology, many drugs shows optically active and in some cases one form will be therapeutically active and where the other one will be therapeutically inactive.
