Tanith Lee began writing the novel, The Gods Are Thirsty in 1982 and completed her first draft in 1985. The idea for the book came after watching the play Danton’s Death on television [1] In the beginning, she was discouraged by the people around her, saying that the French Revolution was pretty horrible to begin with and that it was not going to do well [2] When Lee finally began writing the novel, she wrote it in the form of a diary (something she does not normally do). She put a huge amount of research into the Revolution, being this was her first historical novel. She wanted to stay true to the historical aspects but also make the characters seem like actors. She credits her husband for helping with her in portraying characters to an adult audience. She focused more on the character of Camille because he is one of the unknown characters of the revolution and she wanted to bring light to the importance of his actions. Camille was also the ‘the link’ she says between two huge figures in the revolution (Robespierre and Danton). The book was finally published in 1996
