About me

Previously I was Founding Director of Ranking Digital Rights, an organization that sets global standards for corporate respect for freedom of expression and privacy online. In 2012 I published a book, Consent of the Networked: The Worldwide Struggle for Internet Freedom. I served on the Wikimedia Advisory Board from 2007-2012. In 2008 I helped launch the Hong Kong chapter of Creative Commons. In 2007 I participated in Wikimania Taipei. In 2004 I co-founded Global Voices with Ethan Zuckerman. In a previous life I worked for CNN in China and Japan, serving as CNN Beijing Bureau Chief from 1998-2001 and Tokyo Bureau Chief from 2001-2003.

My work

I joined the Wikimedia Foundation in September 2021 as VP, Global Advocacy. In this role, I lead the development of the foundation's global advocacy strategy, and lead a global team working to promote and defend a legal and regulatory landscape essential to the future of free knowledge globally.
