Heritage Middle school Introduction

Heritage Middle School in Wake Forest North Carolina is a public school that is a multi-track year-round school built in 2003 and opened in 2004 that is serving approximately 1,220 students in the Wake Forest area. Heritage Middle schools mission statement focuses on the 4C's: Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Creativity. These four words drive what the school does with their students and teachers each day. The primary focus of the current School improvement Plan is to integrate literacy strategies and higher level thinking skills seamlessly into all classrooms on a regular basis. the Heritage middle school community pride themselves in establishing and building strong relationships with their students and their families. They strive to love and serve their school community each day. Heritage middle school’s PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Support) program has been recognized at the highest level in the state and serves as a guiding light when management decisions are made. The program's focus is on recognizing the positive actions of Heritage students and making sure that expectations are clearly taught and reinforced. This helps provide a clear structure so that their students can be their best selves and focus their attention on learning.

Heritage Middle Schools serves 1,220 students from grades 6th-8th and within those amount of students are a variety of statistics here are some of them. The percentage of students achieving proficiency in math is 76% (which is higher than the North Carolina state average of 48%) for the 2017-18 school year. The percentage of students achieving proficiency in reading/language arts is 76% (which is higher than the North Carolina state average of 47%) for the 2017-18 school year. Heritage Middle School placed in the top 5% of all schools in North Carolina for overall test scores (math proficiency is top 5%, and reading proficiency is top 5%) for the 2017-18 school year. Minority enrollment is 25% of the student body (majority Black), which is lower than the North Carolina state average of 52%.Heritage Middle schools student Population has stay relatively flat for over 5 years with the highest Student population recorded was over 1500 students in 2014 and after that it started to go town and flatten with an average of around 1220-1260 students. Also the teacher population has stayed around 74 for the past 5 years also. Heritage Middle school is about 51% Male and 49% female which brings me to the Diversity statistics of the school. The diversity score of Heritage Middle School is 0.42, which is less than the diversity score at state average of 0.68. The school's diversity has stayed relatively flat over five school years. Heritage Middle schools Diversity is made up mostly of white students as they have 76% of the schools total population as white other races include Black and African Americans which make up 13% of the population, Latino and Hispanic Students make up 7% of the population, Asian students make up 2% of the population and other races like Native American and Hawaiian/pacific Islander make up .01-.02% of the school population.

Clubs and Activities

Heritage Middle School has many Clubs and activities that involve students to communicate with piers and be apart of Heritage and unlike sports any grade can be apart of a club. Here are some of the clubs

Patriots Pride Honors Chorus: Special Program for Chorus Students that is run by Chorus Teacher Mrs. Castellano.

Dance Company: Special dance program for students interested in dance and performing at different dance competitions. this program is run by dance teacher Mrs. Payton Yvonne Davis.

Future Business leaders of America (FBLA) : this club inspire and prepare students to become community-minded business leaders in a global society through relevant career preparation and leadership experiences.

FCA (fellowship of Christian athletes )The FCA works with athletes and coaches at the middle school, high school, collegiate, and professional levels to “use the powerful medium of athletics to impact the word of Jesus Christ.

Science Olympiad: Science Olympiad is an American team competition in which students compete in 23 events pertaining to various scientific disciplines, including earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering. Over 7,800 middle school and high school teams from 50 U.S. states compete each year.

Global Citizens Club: Global Citizens Club is a student club for both international and domestic students. It is designed to strengthen their relationship with peers, explore different values and characters of the world, integrate students with social activities, exchange cultural ideas and to engage students

Chess club: chess club is a club formed for the purpose of playing the board game of chess. Chess clubs often provide for both informal and tournament games and sometimes offer league play.

Patriot pet club: Club designed for Students and Teachers to help homeless and lost animals find a better home.

Equity Leadership Team: Equity Leadership team is a club known by other names, such as a leadership team, school improvement team, or school climate team.

Battle of the Books: Battle of the books is a group club that reads a selected book and discusses things and parts of the book.

Student Council: Group of Students who work together to create and spread the Pride of Heritage Middle School through events, fundraisers and performances.

Athletics

Heritage Middle School has a variety of athletics and sports that a student can participate in. Sports are only for students in 7th to 8th grade and are seasonal. Depending on the sport students will have practice meetings and scheduled games where they compete with other schools at their level and can possibly win a championship.
