From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I compared the Wikipedia pages for salmiakki in the English and Finnish versions. Salmiakki is a popular liquorice candy in Finland. I chose to compare these articles because I have friends here from Finland and they absolutely love it while the rest of us cannot stand to be around it. The Finnish people use salmiakki to make a terrible tasting alcohol, that again only they like. I wanted to see if there was any type of difference between how Americans view this and how the Finnish people do. From my personal experience, no Americans like it, but the Finnish people love it. The English Wikipedia page had information which I found to be interesting. There was an explanation of the taste on there. This is what I was expecting because it tastes terrible and I do not see how anybody besides the Finnish could like it. The Finnish article does not mention anything about the taste of salmiakki except for that it is "salty". The English actually states "Salty liquorice is an acquired taste and people not familiar with ammonium chloride might find the taste physically overwhelming and unlikeable.". The articles are almost exactly the same sparing the information about taste in the English one. Both talk about the shape and color and where it is popular. Something I was expecting to see on the Finnish article that was not there was more information about the alcoholic beverage that can be made from salmiakki. From my experience Finnish people love salmiakki and they love to drink. I thought the drink would be mentioned more than it was. All the Finnish article stated was that it can be used to make a drink. The English article also mentioned this. I guess I was expecting more information about how to make it on the Finnish article. I also expected something about the taste of the drink on the English article. The drink tastes even worse than the candy so I was expecting something to elaborate on that as well. Overall the articles were almost identical and the history section was almost exactly the same.--SJRick (talk) 07:47, 25 March 2013 (UTC)
