Article Choice

[edit]

As a kid with no siblings, I grew up watching lots of cartoons. Because of that, I was excited when I found an encyclopedia, called "The World Encyclopedia of Cartoons vol. 1". But since the book was published in 1980, it took a bit of searching to find an article about a cartoon that I was familiar with. I eventually found one of Disney's work: Chip 'n' Dale, two mischievous chipmunks that cause mayhem on other Disney characters.

Layout

[edit]

The encyclopedia is broken up into two columns per page and has the cartoons in alphabetical order. However, it is very uncommon to see an article that is longer than half a column. Various pictures are inserted in the encyclopedia that correspond with a particular article, however not all of them will have a picture. Aside from paragraph indentations, there are no "sections" that split up the contents of an article. Wikipedia, on the other hand, has one long page with many sections, such as the history of Chip 'n' Dale as well as background information like who voices the characters, and even information about what games they show up in.

Content Analysis

[edit]

By far, the Wikipedia had more information than the book. The book seemed lacking in depth compared to the Wikipedia article. The book seems to focus more on the specific cartoons that Chip and Dale first appeared in and what they did and seems to go into more depth than Wikipedia. Wikipedia, however, makes up for this by having episode summaries of all 23 short films. The book article on Chip 'n' Dale also seems to be missing things, as they do not go into detail about how the names were invented nor did they give a description of the chipmunks in order to distinguish between the two of them. While Wikipedia gives description about their appearances and personality, neither the book or Wikipedia seemed to mention anything about the brotherly relationship they have for each other. Overall, Wikipedia seems more neutral compared to the book, as the book uses many negative phrases like "larceny" and "run afoul" to describe the chipmunks which makes it seem like they were a pair of evil criminals rather than two pranksters.
