Coin collecting specialties
[edit]There are almost as many different ways of collecting coins as there are coins. Many collectors specialize in some area of collecting and typically organize their collections into different sets of coins. However, they may also acquire coins that do not fit in their main sets. Listed below are some broad categories and types of collecting.
Accumulating (Hoarding)
[edit]The most common type of coin collecting is accumulating or hoarding coins. These types of collections can enjoyed by both children and adults. There is often little organization of this type of collection. If the individual sees a coin of interest, they will keep it and add it into their collection. They may find things in change such as a rarely seen design or an error coin. The knowledge level for this type of collecting is very low and it can be started by anyone. If the collectors interest refines, they may move onto another, more organized, form of collecting.
Date (or Date/Mint Mark)
[edit]Collecting by Date or Date and Mint Mark is a very popular way of collecting coins. This can range from filling folders or albums from pocket change to buying rare coins to complete a set.
Type
[edit]Type collecting is collecting coins different design types. This is a great way to collect a wide variety of coins that represent a country’s coinage. A type collector typically does not care what the date or mint mark of a coin is as long as it represents the design of that type of coin.
Variety
[edit]Variety collectors are much more specialized type of collector. They are concerned with, often minute, differences int eh dies used to mint coins. Morgan dollar VAM collectors are one example.
Country
[edit]Some collectors only collect coins from a certain country. Typically, this is from their country of origin. However, it may also be a country that they have some other interest in or even a country that they admire due to the beauty of it’s coin designs.
Historical Period
[edit]Collecting a certain historical period is also a popular form of collecting. This is often seen with collectors of Ancient coins. For example, they may create a collection of coins from the Roman Republic period.
