Overview
Chartbeat has developed software to enable real-time analysis of digital media content viewers. Publishers of digital media content can use this software to determine what viewers are reading and how long they are staying on the publisher's pages.
Chartbeat was started in April, 2009 in New York, NY. According to CEO Tony Haile, Chartbeat has more than 4,000 top publishers of digital content, such as Forbes, Time, Gannett, Al Jazeera, and NBC-Universal.
Innovative
The industry standard of analysis has been to count the number of "clicks" on a web page to determine where to place ads. Chartbeat dismisses clicks as irrelevant, as most users who click, like and share a page are doing so without reading anything beyond the headline.
Chartbeat's is able to target the viewer who is actually reading the material and to pair brands to that particular story. The goal is to target the viewer who is reading below the proverbial "fold" and those who are more likely to return to a site.
Opinion
With new tracking software that can target advertisers to our online viewing and publishers providing content to meet our personal tastes; are we soon to live in bubbles with very little exposure to new ideas and thoughts? If digital media is to be so tailored, how are we to learn about the whole world around us?
