The 1978–79 CONCACAF Champions Cup was the 15th edition of the tournament. It was the first tournament that allowed for nations to submit champions and runners-up. The New York Cosmos defeated Comunicaciones in the final, becoming the first American team to win the tournament.

Qualified teams[edit]

Twelve league champions that agreed to participate qualified for the group stage. The eight runners-up that participated played in a two-leg playoff to qualify for group stage.
