The puss puss animal is a mammal that resides mainly on the island just west off of Perth, WA - Rottnest island. Cousins of the quokka, puss puss' are nocturnal and are often found at night in groups rather than during the day time. Also known as the short-tailed scrub wallaby, it's the only member of the genus Setonix and is a small macropod about the size of a domestic cat. Like other marsupials in the macropod family (such as kangaroos and wallabies), the puss puss is herbivorous and mainly nocturnal
Personality
[edit]Puss puss' tend not to be friendly, it is advised that you don't try to pet them or they may try to bite you
Diet
[edit]Like most macropods, puss puss' eat many types of vegetation, including grasses, sedges and leaves. They have also been known to scavenge on the leftover remains of quokkas bodies that have died.
Puss Attacks
[edit]Although puss puss' aren't seen frequently, there have been many attacks on humans late at night on Rottnest island. Rottnest island staff advise you not to wander around at night because there are chances that a "puss attack" may happen. One man reported that he heard a rustle from the bush and a hissing puss puss came out and attacked him to protect her babies
Population
[edit]At the time of colonial settlement, the quokka was widespread and abundant, with its distribution encompassing an area of about 41,200 km2 (15,900 sq mi) of the South West of Western Australia, including the two offshore islands, Bald and Rottnest. By 1992, following extensive population declines in the 20th century, the quokka's distribution on the mainland had been reduced by more than 50% to an area of about 17,800 km2.
