Choi San (Korean: 최산; Hanja: 崔山; born July 10, 1999), mononymously known as San, is a South Korean singer, dancer, choreographer[1], actor[2] and songwriter. He is known as the lead vocalist and main dancer of the k-pop boy group Ateez in 2018.

Early Life

[edit]

San was born in the rural countryside of Namhae, Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea, to mother, Kim Nam Ji, and father, Choi Jong Cheol, a director of Namhae Sports Association for the Disabled[3].

During his middle school years, he approached his father, telling him that he wanted to be a singer. During his first year of high school in Namhae, he was accepted to Korean Arts High School, and transferred, moving to Seoul.

It was revealed that Trot singer Na Sang Do provided support and advice on San's path to becoming a singer, and courage given by composer and song-writer, Professor Kim Hyuna.

Pre-debut

[edit]

2017

[edit]

In October 2017, San, alongside other KQ Entertainment trainees, auditioned for the survival reality show Mixnine created by YG Entertainment. San however, didn't pass the audition.

2018

[edit]

Prior to debut, KQ Entertainment formed "KQ Fellaz", which San was a part of alongside the 7 other members that would then become Ateez.

On May 18, 2018, KQ Entertainment released the YouTube video "KQ Fellaz Performance Video I", which featured San alongside the other 7 Ateez members together for the first time, dancing to the song "Pick It Up" by rapper Famous Dex. Shortly after, the group premiered their pre-debut web series, KQ Fellaz American Training, showcasing the eight members in Los Angeles, California, training at The Millennium Dance Complex. For the finale of the web series, KQ Fellaz released the music video of "From", a song which San was credited as song-writer alongside the Ateez members. This was San's first ever KOMCA credit as a song-writer.
