History

[edit]

Chapada dos Guimarães was founded by the António Rolim de Moura, the first governor of the captaincy of Mato Grosso, 1751. The village was called Santana, and a church and settlement were built by the Jesuits. Santana was moved 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) from its original sites after the expulsion of the Jesuits from Brazil in 1759, and a small chapel was built on the site of Church of Our Lady of Santana do Sacramento.[3]

1778, the circuit judge of Cuiabá and the magistrate (ouvidor) of the Mato Grosso captaincy, José Carlos Pereira, noted the poor state of the Chapel of Saint Anne in the settlement of Guimarães and decided to build a new church. 31st July, 1779 The church was consecrated on , by the vicar José Correia Leitão, who celebrated the first mass. The images of Saint Anne, Saint Ignatius of Loyola and Saint Francis Xavier were brought over from the Chapel of Aldeia Velha. 1779. That same year, Governor Luís de Albuquerque de Melo Pereira e Cáceres informed the court that the church had been built “with much splendour and decency for this land”. 1784, the local residents applied for paraments so that mass could be held in the parish church; they stated that, although the chancel had collapsed during construction, it had been rebuilt and the church was now complete. The same document indicated that the settlement counted “a very large group of houses to lodge pilgrims who travel there” 1780 drawing shows the floor plan and the elevations of the front and side façades of the church. 1957 The church was listed by IPHAN 1977, 1994-1996 and 2008. Renovations

Joaquim Ferreira Moutinho described the origin of the church in the Noticia sobre a provincia de Matto Grosso seguida d'um roteiro da viagem da sua capital a São Paulo () of 1869.

Structure

[edit]

[The floor plan comprises a large rectangle inside which the church is contained, with a single nave and chancel, and with side rooms with exterior entrances most likely used for the church’s services. A single large nave corresponds to the main body, whose very simple façade is marked by a door and three windows on the upper level. The project envisaged two side towers, which were built as far as the second floor, each with a window. The last section of what would be the bell towers is missing, making the present-day church quite horizontal in appearance. The side rooms are situated along the same lines as the towers.]

Renata Malcher de Araujo noted that "[t]he simple and robust appearance recalls the churches of Goiás."Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page).
